When You're Too Exhausted to Adjust...Tips to Overcome Personal Change Fatigue

Change is suçh a simple word, but it has the ability to have a huge impact on someone’s life, personally and professionally. Change can seem very scary for most people. More often than not, people prefer doing things how they’ve always done them. Don’t fix something that isn’t broken, right? The initial natural reaction to change is to resist.

Unfortunately, if you’re unable to adapt quickly to the changes coming your way, it can often lead to feelings of exhaustion, confusion, lack of motivation, decreased performance, and overall, just feeling completely burnt out. When you’re feeling too exhausted to adjust, how are you supposed to find the time and energy to overcome personal change fatigue?

1. Conduct a Self Assessment

Try to determine how fatigued you actually are by conducting a self-assessment. This assessment can help determine how the changes you’ve experienced are positively and/or negatively affecting you and your life. Ask yourself the types of questions like the ones listed below to try to determine what your fatigue actually looks like:

  • What feelings are you experiencing?

  • How often do you feel this way?

  • When did you start feeling this way?

  • When’s the last time you took a break or a day off?

  • How did you feel when the change first happened?

  • How has this change impacted your life?

  • What impact did this change have on your life?

2. Find Some Time to Rest and Recover

If you’re already feeling exhausted, you need to rest and recover before you can even think about taking on more change or disruption to your normal routine. This could be as simple as adjusting your sleep schedule by going to bed a little earlier or sleeping in a little longer on weekends. Maybe it’s time to use one of your personal days off of work for a chance to turn off your brain, relax and unwind a bit. If you’re needing something a little more extensive than just one day out of the office, it may be the perfect time to take a much-needed vacation. Recharge your battery, so you can come back refreshed and fully charged.

3. Plan Ahead

If you’re aware of the changes coming your way, you can try to prepare and plan for them and picture what your life will look like in the months to come. Try to determine how the changes will affect your personal life, professional life, and even the relationships in your life. The planning will allow you the time to adjust and adapt accordingly.

4. Adjust and Adapt Accordingly

Adjusting and adapting can be easier said than done, but planning ahead can help make the transition a little easier. When mapping out the changes happening in your life, don’t forget to incorporate some rest days and self-care days. Reach out to friends to hang out, laugh, and distract yourself from those harder days. Schedule some much-needed time with your therapist for a good ole vent session.

Change can be extremely hard, and finding the energy to get through any type of change can be even an even harder task to accomplish. But change is possible to navigate. Acknowledging the changes that are happening in your life is the first step in figuring out an action plan and solution to handling the changes coming your way.

Just taking the time to acknowledge and admit to yourself that change is happening can help ease you through any road bumps. Next time you’re feeling too exhausted to adjust to the changes occurring in your day-to-day, take these steps and come up with a plan that works for you to get through it.
