3 Tips to Make the Most Out of Telehealth Therapy
1. Remember That It’s Not Just Another Zoom Meeting
So much of life has been transferred over to video meetings and digital platforms that it’s become a natural part of life. We zoom while we’re in the middle of household tasks, quietly making our shopping lists during an online meeting or trying to entertain our kids.
But to get the most out of teletherapy, it’s important to separate it from other everyday zoom meetings. You want to give these online therapy meetings the time and attention they deserve. Suppose you try to have your teletherapy session while multitasking, the effectiveness of your sessions may suffer. Teletherapy isn’t the same as video chatting with your friends while cooking dinner!
With this in mind, you’ll want to find a quiet, private space where you can focus on your therapy sessions without interruption. Try to ensure that you pre-plan for potential distractions, whether that be your yappy dog or curious children. Let your family know that you need to be alone. Ask them to respect this time.
2. Be Proactive
As with many things essential, teletherapy requires an investment of your time and proactive participation. (It may also involve an investment of your money, although many insurance carriers have waived or significantly reduced teletherapy fees during the pandemic.)
For example, it may feel a little uncomfortable at first to try to open up to a therapist in a virtual session. It can feel different than getting to know someone in person in a quiet office — but that’s ok.
You can be proactive by asking your therapist what actions they suggest to help during this introductory period.
Likewise, don’t be afraid to be specific about what you’re hoping to get out of your sessions. You can direct your discussions with your therapist to those issues that are most pressing to you. If you don’t mention these to your therapist, they won’t be able to help.
3. Embrace the Benefits of Teletherapy
Many people who’ve used telehealth therapy have discovered some incredible benefits that aren’t there with in-person sessions. People often point out that they can feel more relaxed and engaged in a session when they’re in the familiar, comfortable setting of their own home.
The hassles of bad weather, rush hour traffic, or commute time don’t have to get in your way with teletherapy. If you’re feeling a little ill, you don’t have to cancel your online session. You can stay in your yoga pants and sweatshirt and not feel underdressed.
Teletherapy may also give you and your therapist additional tools to use. They can send you links to relaxation exercises, screen share important information, and possibly message you during the week for brief check-ins. The flexibility and adaptability of teletherapy are something to appreciate.
